Paragliding at the Costa Adeje Base

The Flying Experience

One of the most frequented sites on Tenerife.
Good access by car. Parking near the start.
Very large space on the mountain, no grass, carpets for takeoff

Elevation 764 meters, launch direction SW.

Taucho is an area for botany lovers who are interested in cacti with spikes of up to 5 cm! Assuming precise landing, you will find a really ideal flight area here.

The starting place at the Taucho was elaborately prepared in December 2005. There is now room for up to 20 paragliders. This makes it easy to start and a pleasure to the top landing.

The locals also use the good conditions, Canarian championships have already been held. The landing site at the Disco Tropicana is clearly visible from the starting point.

In good conditions, it is possible to fly to the beach and end the day at the beach bar.

As of January 2015:
The gate is always open, and it is constantly landed on the beach of las Calettas. Right next to the bar. All tandem pilots also land there.

Landing on Playa de la Enramada, or if you don’t make it there are several options between Highway/ Tropicana and beach. Take into account that available landing spots change every year due to construction.

The locals meet at the Disco Tropicana, the main landing site. There you can find out about the access to the take-off site and the current flight conditions.
Without local knowledge, the starting place is difficult to find.
By car, walk. There are shuttles for €8 (ask for Karina) or take a taxi for 4 from the Caleta beach.

Very beautiful site and unforgettable flight to the beach but it is not trivial to fly there despite the sun and the sea.

Increase your safety margins with respect to other sails and the terrain. Plan a plan B or C to land safely and not in cacti or on large stones.

Indeed, we fly in the lee of Teide and often the wind at altitude (1000 m or more) comes from the north or the northeast and yet it takes off thanks to the breeze. Only take off if ALL the top windsocks and the bottom flames are in the same direction! And only take off if there are people around, otherwise there is danger! Local tandem pilots can provide you with information.

Be careful to do your pre-flight well and with the fine lines which can get stuck with the pieces of carpet

What is exciting about this place?

The coastal views are incredible

Is it beginner friendly?

Not easy for beginners, not many landings available, if you don't have experience thermal IMG, it's not your place. Also you need to know about the wind here as it's very changeable. Many rescues are thrown from beginners. And you don't want to land on the cactus

What are the local regulations?

Not allowed to fly in los cristianos (as many people think, there is ctr and can be fine with really expensive amount)

You need a pilot licence and insurance, covering medical and helicopter rescue, and third party.

Landing on the (sand) beach in Costa Adeje (N28.092 W16.745) is strictly prohibited and controlled by local police to avoid injuries of people on the beach.

Landing on rocky black beach westwards (N28.0924 W16.7466) or even pirate beach (N28.0976 W16.7515) is tolerated (but better not push your luck).

Know before you go

You can get a shuttle for 10€ per ride. Flying rules same as everywhere, right of WAy etc... No fees for take off or landing. You can't reach the beach on a glide, so need to check alternative landings before flying., In case of emergency: Emergency number 112
If necessary when calling this number, they will send helicopter.

What is the Climate like?

What is the temperature?

When is best to go fly here?

November to April

How is the Weather?

What are the flying conditions?

This area is thermic. There is no soaring. The thermals are tight and varying between more turbulent and more smooth days. This coast is one of the more potent spots to fly in the canary islands. It is the highest island of all. There is 3718m volcano, the tallest in Spain. The prevailing wind is north-east, which is blocked by the mountain range. The flying is on the lee side. The take-off is South-west facing. The take-off is done with thermic air. It is incredibly hot here, in the summer its like 40 degrees Celcius at the take-off, because of the inversions it can be more hot at takeoff than at landing.

Do not fly if local pilots are on the ground.
Check for hard left or right wind on the start.
Try to land fast if you see white waves on the sea.

Taucho take-off is in the lee side of the Tenerife Island. Best flying is when the main wind to the island is NE. 80% of the year wind direction is NE. This gives SW lee side winds on the start and landing and good thermal conditions with a possibility to thermal the 25 km length of SW side of Island
