Paragliding at the Aguergour Atlas Base

The flying experience

Looking for an affordable winter escape that combines adventure and culture? The Atlas Mountains in Morocco is your ideal destination! Morocco is known to be North Africa’s free flying paradise, offering exceptional flying conditions from October to April. The warm, lifty air is a welcome relief from the colder weather back home.

Fly into Marrakesh, the cultural heart of Morocco, which serves as your starting point for exploration. Explore the enchanting souks, indulge in delicious Moroccan cuisine, and soak in the vibrant Islamic culture. Haggling for local crafts and treasures is a must. From there, you can access top flying sites like Aguergour, which is located about 35 km southwest of Marrakesh (about an hour away).

Forget bars and discos; Aguergour is about raw adventure. Just dusty roads, and sometimes the simplest of accommodation, this is adventure paragliding at its best. The take-off is relatively large, located at 1258m hight, with space to smoothly top-land for a rewarding cup of traditional Moroccan mint tea. The site has little stones, faces north-west and looks out over the plains, with a high plateau behind launch.

The flying is perfect for beginners who come here to soar the rocky escarpments of the lower Atlas mountains in warm blue thermals, wearing shorts and a T-shirt. There are often stronger thermo dynamic winds at take-off that require more than basic ground handling skills, but the thermals here are known to be warm and smooth, and the air is mostly calm. Besides that, the rugged beauty of the High Atlas mountains offer a breathtaking backdrop for paragliding. You can expect some stunning views of the extensive valleys, dotted with charming villages, and almond, fig and date trees.

Experienced pilots usually come to fly the more adventurous cross-country routes, which extend in all directions. Going over the back is pretty remote and there are not many roads, so just make sure you plan your retrieve beforehand. The good thing is, there are always pilots around that can give you some advice and tips on what to do and what not.

Climate and Weather

When is best to go fly here?

The Atlas is best flown during the winter season, which runs from October to the beginning of April. During this time it is flyable almost everyday.

From October to December, Morocco is still mostly dry and dusty. Sun activity is decreasing as winter comes in, which means thermal activity becomes smoother. Some fronts may occur (topping up snow on the summits) lasting a few hours to a few days. The good thing is, they will bring instability and create the best cross country conditions you can imagine.

From January to April, as we get close to Spring, this is when it gets real good for cross-country flying, and flying in the Sahara dunes. Morocco gets greener, snow covers the mountain summit and water flows in the rivers. Thermals are powerful, but smooth because of the warm stable air coming from the dessert.

Be aware that the conditions can get fairly strong between November to February, which is when most pilots from abroad tend to visit. Expect it to be windy (thermal dynamic) at launch, sometimes more windy as would be acceptable in the Alps.

In spring (April to June) things start to get rowdy as air is sucked into the landmass of Africa. Summers are generally too hot, too thermic, and the winds are too strong to fly during the day and only evening flights are recommended.

How are the flying conditions?

In the winter season expect the cloud-base to be around 1,500 to 2,500 meters.

You can fly in a T-shirt and shorts (just long trousers are nicer in case you land in cactus), as you will be soaring and flying in warm dry air from the desert.

The prevailing wind in the High Atlas Mountains is north-west. This reliable north-westerly breeze feeds warm air directly to our favourite flying sites including Aguergour, Ait Ourir, Toufliat, and Mzouda. Cross country flying is possible in the High Atlas Mountains on most days, and should the opportunity arise to go cross country, let’s go! The evening conditions are very special, which is why pilots often fly until sunset here. You can soar for hours.

When the wind turns East, it is not recommended to start, because you will be flying in the lee.

What is the temperature like?

Temperatures during the day time in the Spring generally around 25°C , but Morocco is “a hot country where it gets cold”. Differences of over 30°C between night and day are not unusual in the mountains. Please be aware that although you will probably experience “summer” weather during the day, evenings can be cool to chilly in the mountains. Layer up at night!
