Paragliding at the Engare Sero Adventure Base

The Flying Experience

This area is rather untouched by pilots and offers a bunch of adventurous flying sites. There are three main one’s that you could explore while you stay in a nearby village called Engare Sero. Mt. Ngaresero, the Oldonyo Lengai (‘Mountain of God’, is the only active volcano in Tanzania), and the Kerimasi Crater (2496m). The flying sites are about 10-20km removed from each other. This area is home to the intriguing indigenous Masaai Tribe.

While you are there you can go find the largest human fossil footprint site that has ever been discovered in Africa. The footprints are a byproduct of an ancient volcanic mudflow from the nearby Oldoinyo Lengai which is still active. (-2.6036659400089714, 35.92392490696753)

Another cool thing to do is go on an expedition to the bright red Lake Natron, the deadliest lake on earth. Its an alkaline (salt) lake famous for some of the most phantasmagorical photographs ever captured — images that look as though living animals had instantly turned to stone. In fact, Lake Natron supports a thriving ecosystem of salt marshes, freshwater wetlands, flamingos and other wetland birds, tilapia and algae. It looks like a different planet.

What is exciting about this place?

With a bit of luck you get to fly by the crater of the only active Volcano in Tanzania, surrounded by some really green canyons.

Is it beginner friendly?

This site is not well-flown and is mostly visited by independent pilots that know how to judge weather conditions. Beginners ought to stick with better flown sites and go accompanied with other more experienced pilots.

Know before you go

This base is remote and so we recommend to go with a tour-guide or driver, or to rent a fully equipped 4x4 to explore this volcano and crater area. Make sure your tour guide has taken care of your national park entries and flying permits before you arrive to Tanzania.

The Travel Experience

How to get there?

After your arrival at Kilimanjaro airport its usually not a bad idea to stay the night in Arusha. From Arusha we advise to hire a guide (such as Mupana Tours) to take you to Engare Sero, by Lake Natron. This takes about 5 hours. A guide is not only able to drive, but they also arrange the appropriate park entries and flying licenses, plus they can take you on the many tours and safari’s that this region offers.

Nearest airport: Kilimanjaro International Airport
