Paragliding at the Piedechinche Base
The flying experience
Piedechinche is located in the Southern Cauca Valley near Santa Elena and is an ideal destination for new paragliding pilots. This flying site offers a perfect combination of easy launches, smooth thermals, expansive landing fields, and easy retrieves. The light, reliable thermic conditions make it an excellent place to learn and practice the art of thermalling. There is a restaurant at the landing, and from there you can go straight back up for your next flight.
For those looking to progress to cross-country (XC) flying, Piedechince is a fantastic starting point. Many pilots use the site for warm-up days, and just thermal away. Some days its even harder to come down than to stay up.
Launch and landing info
Launch:
The top launch called “Siete” has launch fees. You pay at the launch and will get a bracelet. In 2025 this fee is 15k.
Landing:
If landing cross country you can land on the lanes between the sugar cane, but do not land in the crops. Not just out of respect for the farmer, that stuff can grow really tall and the leaves cut like knives. Also don’t land in or near the Sugar cane museum as it will be very hard to find retrieve from there.
How to get to ‘Siete’ takeoff:
If you are in Santa Elena, you can go to the Siga La Vaca reception by the parking lot, to see if there is anyone going up. Or take a taxi to the LZ for 25k. Rides from the LZ to launch are 15k (2025).
You can also directly contact the shuttles for a pick you up in town. In the high season they sometimes offer a ride straight from town to launch for 25k (2025).
Many pilots take a taxi to the LZ, to Dedalos. From there you can always find a ride up.
What is exciting about this place?
Its a safe place to fly with few air spaces. Flying conditions are perfect, not too strong but good enough for long cross-country flights. The retrieve is easy and safe.

What are the local regulations?
Airspace:
It’s advisable to check with the locals before taking off. Piedechinche is located in a restricted airspace, but they allow paragliding pilots to fly there. They did however set areas where you cannot fly and therefore ignoring these limitations can lead to them closing the entire airspace for us.

Climate and Weather
When is best to go fly here?
The flying season runs from December to March and again from July to September.
The seasons in Valle del Cauca are influenced by Colombia's tropical climate, but they are primarily shaped by two key periods: the dry season and the rainy season.
1. Dry Season (Dec-Mar, Jul-Sep)
This is the peak paragliding season in Valle del Cauca. During these months, the weather is characterized by clear skies, consistent thermals, and minimal rainfall, creating ideal conditions for cross-country (XC) flying. The thermals are strong but smooth, providing pilots with plenty of lift and allowing for long-distance flights. The dry season is marked by stable weather patterns, which also means the winds are generally light and predictable, making it perfect for both beginners and experienced pilots.
2. Rainy Season (Apr-Jun, Oct-Nov)
While the rainy season brings more frequent showers and unstable weather, flying can still be possible, though less predictable. These months tend to see more overcast skies, and thunderstorms can develop in the afternoons. However, pilots who are comfortable with changing conditions and who know how to read the weather can still enjoy flying, especially during the mornings before the rain starts.
How are the flying conditions?
Looking at the Windy weather forecast above, you will probably notice that it will be raining every day this week. And it probably will, how else would you be flying over super green rainforest? However, in this microclimate you will be able to see the build up of a heavy raincloud, and just fly around it, or fly away and land. This is not the Alps.
The best thing you can do is to look out of your window in the morning and go up to launch, no matter what you see. When you get to the launch, don’t get discouraged if you are in the clouds, or its even raining. This will clear up and you will be the first in the sky.
The wind is usually light from either the north or the south. Typically there are no strong winds and the thermals are often gentle making the flying almost perfect. However, this reputation for superlight wonderful thermals is somewhat overemphasised and changing weather patterns mean conditions are getting stronger. The conditions are still good, but you can expect some pretty active flying too.
Flying here starts early. The thermic breeze hits launch around 9am and flying typically start around 11am. Once the flatlands start working around midday, you can start moving out into the valley, and fly to the other side of the valley, onto the range of hills on the eastern side. The good thing about the locations of Piedechinche is that it is not influenced by the Pacific West winds (like in Roldanillo), which means you can launch all day.
Cloudbase is typically around 1,800m to 2,300m.
What is the temperature like?
The region enjoys a temperate climate year-round, with warm daytime temperatures typically ranging from 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F), ensuring comfortable conditions for long flights. The area’s altitude—around 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) above sea level also contributes to the mild weather. You could fly in T-shirt and shorts, but many pilots use thin long sleeved shirts to protect from the sun and wind.

The Travel Experience
How to get there?
Piedechinche is easily accessible from Cali, the nearest major city, which is about 2 hours away by car. You don’t have to go into Cali first, unless you feel like dancing on your first night. You can take a bus from the Airport to “tres esquinas” in Rozo. From there you can take the DeOccidente bus to El Cerrito. Or you can contact a driver.

What to bring?
Check out our Packing List to find out what to bring on a paragliding trip. Apart from this list, the locals recommend you should bring: Waterproof jacket and cover for your bag (Colombia is tropical and the odd down-burst is to be expected), summer flying gloves, light layers (except on the high base days you might find shorts and T-shirts sufficient). You won’t need much warm clothing and nothing too fluffy, but if you stay quite high in the Andes Mountains, then a fleece or light jacket could be nice.
What to do on your day off?
Once in Santa Elena, the village is a charming and welcoming spot, offering local restaurants, cafés, and bars where you can unwind after a day of flying. Santa Elena is also known for its salsa culture, and if you visit Cali, you can experience the city’s vibrant nightlife and salsa clubs, recognized as the salsa capital of the world.
For nature lovers, in the valley, not far from the landing zone there is the Sugar Cane museum, with a large botanical garden. But if you like it bigger go to the Farallones de Cali National Natural Park where you can go hiking and spot some more wildlife. The park is home to numerous bird species, monkeys, and tropical plants.
Wanna go for a swim? About 2km from the landing zone there is a canyon with a swim hole and a little restaurant with some local food. They charge a tiny entry fee, but then a lovely swim in fresh water is guaranteed. Also on the way up to the take-off there is a swim hole made by the owner of the take-off. But it can be a bit chilly there if you go there to late and it is in the shade.
You can also visit local coffee farms in the area, where you can learn about the coffee production process, tour plantations, and sample some of the finest coffee in Colombia. Additionally, the nearby Pance River provides a scenic spot for picnics, and the area is known for its outdoor activities, including birdwatching and fishing.
