Paragliding at the Tapalpa Base

The Flying Experience

Conoce la primera fábrica de papel de América Latina, admira unas formaciones rocosas gigantes y explora un bosque frondoso.

In recent years Tapalpa has been overlooked by many free-flight visitors to Mexico, who have tended to head to of Valle de Bravo instead, but the pilots who have flown Tapalpa can’t see why. They say Tapalpa has great flying, the site doesn’t tend to blow out over lunchtime like it does in Valle, and the infrastructure can’t be beaten. Local buses stop at launch and cost very little, and you can sleep and eat near the two main take-offs, which are either side of the main road.

Mexico is quickly becoming a popular destination for paragliders from all over the world. And Tapalpa, in Jalisco, is one of the best places to enjoy this exhilarating sport. Situated at an altitude of over 7000 feet, the launch site offers paragliders stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Not only is the scenery breathtaking, but the conditions are perfect for paragliding. With moderate winds and thermals that keep you in the air for hours, you’ll be able to explore this area like never before.

Launch
the lanch site has a covered area that although basic, has flushing toilets, a pool tabel and you can buty a beer! Not too shabby!
- La Ceja
- Gravidad Cero (incl Toplanding)

Town
- On top of the mesa like mountain lies the town of Tapalpa. It is one of Mexico’s Pueblo Mágico, or magic towns, and it was easy to see why. The streets are cobblestone and the walls are painted stucco. There are no supermarkets or fast food joints, and each business is a single room if not a street stall, even in the center of town.
- Tapalpa is considered a Magical Town, term given to places of special cultural richness, located in the state of Jalisco, Mexico. Its name means “Place of Colored Land” in Otomí. This place is known for its forest landscape and beautiful white houses with red rooftops.
- Tapalpa is just what we expected a small Mexican mountain puebla would be, with the occasional horse and rider promenading down its narrow cobblestone streets, white washed buildings sheltered by scarlet shingled roofs, a bucolic town square surrounding its stunning old cathedral; all set in a valley engulfed by towering pine laden mountains.

Hanggliding:
Excellent place to do some XC with your hangglider. Its about 60km to fly to Sant Marcos, just be aware of the current Airspace restrictions. Launch is possible from La Ceja or from Gravidad Cero.

What is the Climate like?

What is the temperature?

The Tapalpa town is located at almost 2,000 m above sea level, and so at night it can be quite cold.

When is best to go fly here?

How is the Weather?

What are the flying conditions?

Although generally not too turbulent, the flying conditions can sometimes be quite strong here, and the thermals occasionally a little tricky to work, especially on the hot days. This requires active piloting and if you are just new out of school than you can better take a course with a local school in Tapalpa first.
