Know before you go!
Tenerife is a rewarding place to fly but can be difficult for mainland pilots to adapt to, with a mix of thermic activity, sea breezes and trade winds making the aerology complex and subject to change. Pilots need to be adept at launching in thermic conditions, able to land in often tight landing zones with cactusses, and have an understanding of island weather.
It is a place for intermediate pilots and above looking to hone skills and keep them sharp, not beginners looking to learn the fundamentals. Pilots should be aware of their skill level versus flying conditions, take their garbage with them, fly away from the area when there’s a rescue helicopter, and only land on beaches that are authorised for landing, and only when there are not too many people. And, of course, stay away from the cacti.
Regulations
There are several places pilots must not fly. These include:
- The Los Cristianos ridge (CTR),
- Montaña Roja in El Medano (CTR)
- Teide National Park.” Teide National Park is named for Mount Teide, a towering volcano in the centre of the island and at 3,718m Spain’s highest peak. You are not allowed to fly the Teide volcano, above the crater of Teide, or above or close to the Izaña Observatory.
There are also some other flying sites in the north of the island that are in the CTR, and therefore illegal to fly.
Weather and Climate
What is the Climate like?
Tenerife enjoys a subtropical climate, making it a year-round destination with pleasant temperatures and diverse weather conditions. The island is known for its "microclimates," meaning weather can vary significantly depending on the region and elevation.
At sea level, temperatures typically range between 18°C (64°F) in winter and 25°C (77°F) in summer. The southern part of the island, such as Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos, tends to be sunnier and drier, with rainfall averaging less than 200mm annually. The north, especially around Puerto de la Cruz, is cooler and wetter, with rainfall exceeding 500mm per year, leading to lush greenery.
For paragliding, the cloudbase height can vary. On clear days, it often ranges from 1,500m (4,920ft) to 2,500m (8,200ft), depending on the location and weather. In winter, the cloudbase can be lower due to cooler air masses, while summer often sees higher cloudbases.
The dominant wind directions are from the northeast, thanks to the trade winds. These winds can be consistent, though the island’s mountainous terrain causes variations in wind speed and direction, creating thermals that benefit paragliders. Coastal winds are typically lighter, while inland areas can experience more turbulent conditions, especially during the afternoon when thermals are strongest.
The Travel Experience
How do you get around?
Navigating this island can be a test of patience. Buses are great for main destinations, but useless for pilots going up and down across the general bus trajectories. Taxis are relatively expensive, and might not be so punctual.
Many pilots bring their own car on the ferry. It is great for some remote adventures, but the boat is expensive and you must book your return to make sure you have a spot on a boat back. Otherwise you might be stuck here for a few more months.
You can also rent a car locally, allowing the freedom to discover hidden gems, but they also come at a price. In the winter season it is hard to find a car below 20 euros a day (2024).
Ferries seamlessly connect the islands. If you have the time this is definitely a cool thing to do.

Ethnicity and religion
Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, is home to a diverse population with a rich cultural blend. The majority of people are of Spanish descent, as Tenerife is part of Spain, but the island's history has shaped a unique ethnic profile. The indigenous Guanches, the original Berber inhabitants of the Canary Islands, have left a lasting influence on the culture and language, though their numbers are now small. Over centuries, the island has seen migration and interaction from mainland Spain, Africa, and Europe, which has contributed to its multicultural makeup.
Today, Tenerife's population is predominantly Spanish, with a growing number of expatriates from mainland Spain, Europe, and Latin America. The influx of tourists and seasonal workers from various countries further enriches the cultural landscape. This blend of ethnicities creates a vibrant community, where traditional Canarian culture coexists with modern influences, making Tenerife a melting pot of history, traditions, and modern-day diversity.
Local language
In the Canary Islands, Spanish is the official language, reflecting the region's status as an autonomous community of Spain. Additionally, in some areas, particularly in the westernmost islands like ‘La Gomera’ and ‘El Hierro’, there are remnants of a whistled language called ‘Silbo Gomero’, which was historically used for communication across long distances. Silbo Gomero is considered an intangible cultural heritage of the islands.
What to eat when you are hungry?
The local cuisine in Tenerife is a happy fusion of Spanish and African influences, with a mix of fresh ingredients and spices.
You must try some of the local favorites like ‘papas arrugadas’ (salty wrinkled potatoes) with ‘mojo’ sauce. And, ‘gofio’, a local flour used in various dishes, adding a unique nutty flavor.
Also, Tenerife is a paradise for fresh catches. From the savory vieja sancochada (fish stew) to the mojo-drizzled grilled octopus. You will love the local seafood.
Let's not forget dessert! Bienmesabe, a sweet concoction of almonds and honey, is a must-try, along with sipping on some banana liqueur – it's like sunshine in a glass!
What to read while you are on the road?
What to do on your day off?

Whether you're soaking up the sun on the golden sands of Playa de las Teresitas, hiking through the lunar-like landscapes of Teide National Park, or exploring the charming streets of Santa Cruz de Tenerife or La Laguna (lovely town), Whale-watching off the coast, sampling delicious Canarian cuisine, or dancing the night away at a local fiesta, Tenerife promises an unforgettable island escape. So, pack your swimsuit, your hiking boots, and your sense of adventure, and come explore this incredible Volcano Island.
