What is it like?
While it will still be winter in Europe, Morocco will be wonderfully warm, with some of the best flying conditions of the year. Apart from this, Morocco is culturally vibrant and has some delicious food! This makes it an ideal location to organise some fun activities, eat good food, and fly in the stunning landscapes of the Atlas Mountains.
The rugged beauty of the High Atlas offers a truly breathtaking backdrop for paragliding. As we soar the sky, we can enjoy the stunning views of the extensive valleys, dotted with charming villages, and almond, fig and date trees. The thermals here are known to be warm and gentle, and the air is mostly calm, making it perfect for both beginners and experienced pilots.
After a smooth toplanding, you will be rewarded with a cup of traditional Moroccan mint tea, which is a great way to relax and recharge before your next flight. If you ever bomb out, our shuttle will fetch you and take you back to the launch.
As evening falls, we will land next to our authentic Moroccan accommodation, where we will savor a traditional, home-cooked meal. Their delicious tagines, couscous, and aromatic spices offer the perfect way to unwind from a busy day in the sky. Not relaxed enough? You can jump into their hammam (hot steam bath) any time. Sound good?
Are you a pilot, with more than 50 hours of flying experience? Someone who loves to combine a unique cultural travel experience with the joy of flying, and participate in (flying) activities? Are you excited by the idea of exploring new flying sites, seeing some spectacular landscapes?
Come join us in Morocco next spring, and travel along with like-minded pilots in a supportive, and empowering environment.
Who is it for?
This is not a hardcore XC guiding trip, but rather a flying holiday for both beginners and more experienced pilots. We are looking to put together a group of pilots that are keen to travel somewhere warm, and to enjoy both cultural and flying activities.
In general you are:
1. Wanting to have fun!
2. A pilot over 18.
3. Someone who loves to combine a unique cultural travel experience with the joy of flying together.
4. Looking for a small group of like-minded pilots in a supportive, and empowering environment.
5. Excited by the idea of exploring new flying sites, seeing some spectacular landscapes in both rugged mountains or maybe coastal areas.
6. A pilot with more than 50 hours of flying hours, with preferably a bit of thermalling experience.
7. You have some practice hours on the ground, and therefore able to manage your wing and launch / land independently.
What will we do?
Once you have arrived and settled in we will have a chat so that we can get to know you and your flying style a bit.
If you need some time to get aqcuinted with your equipment, especially if you have not flown for a while, then we can organize a bit of ground-handle training, when the conditions allow it.
We will be around Aguergour mostly, in the Atlas mountains. However, our daily itinerary is weather dependent. We will be exploring the Atlas, Anti Atlas and Coastal sites in the South of Morocco. We will relocate as we see where is best conditions and experience for the group. We may visit sites such as Aguergour, Ait Ourir, Tiz n test, M zouda, The Blue Rocks, Kerdous, Aglou, Eagles Nest, Legzira, or others.
* On days we cannot fly (which are rare), we will do our best to organise another activity like: camel rides, visiting a local market, go swimming or hiking, Quad tour, or go to a traditional Hammam (wet steam room). Some of these activities might have an additional cost, but we will discuss these with you before making any plans.
Where will we stay?
We will mostly be based in the Atlas, where we will be staying in a wonderful Gîte with great cuisine and Hammam, based at the main landing zone.
The areas we will be flying in are relatively underdeveloped and housing options tend to be quite basic. In our case, the accommodation is shared, and showers are warm. Breakfast and dinner will be included, which will be delicious local Moroccan cuisine.
What is included?
For this paragliding holiday we have tried to keep all cost to a minimum, without leaving out any comforts. This is what is covered in the price:
- Help with your Moroccan flying authorization documentation.
- Accommodation (basic shared room) with breakfast and dinner included. Most places also have a Hammam.
- Airport transfers to/from Marrakech airport (or Agadir on request) on travel days.
- Daily site intro and weather condition briefing.
- Transportation from Accommodation to the flying site.
- Dedicated retrieves.
- Post-flight coaching and track-log review.
- Instrument setup support.
- Daily launch fees.
- Drinking water.
- Kids around take-off and landing that are annoyingly interested in our sport.
This is what is NOT included:
1. Airline flights (to Agadir or Marrakech)
2. Tandem flights.
3. Lunch meals.
What are the requirements?
Important documents:
1. In order to fly in Morocco, you need to have a flying authorization. We will help you with this once you are signed up.
2. Valid paragliding license (with at least CP +20 hr or Pilot level and beyond. Ippi 4 min if non BHPA).
3. Medical and Accident insurance covering paragliding in Morocco, like MedJet, Global Rescue, etc.
4. Travel cancellation insurance.
5. Passport, valid for at least 6 more months.
6. Visas are normally granted at the border, for a duration of 90 days. Consult the Moroccan Embassy in your home country for more information.
7. No specific vaccins are required in this country.
Gear:
1. Complete paragliding gear suitable for your skill level. Recommended is an EN-B Glider. This is not a tour for racing Enzo’s, but feel free to bring one to use in your own time. Obviously EN-A gliders are also welcome.
2. Glider needs to have been checked in the last two years or after 200 hours, whichever came first.
3. Reserve parachute re-packed within the last 6 months.
4. A 2-meter band radio, which is used for us to be able to work together; best is a high-quality radio like ICOM, Yaesu, etc. Unless you would like to fly without. That is also okay.
5. If you do not have a navigation device we suggest to download Naviters SeeYou app to track your flights. This is similar to FlySkyHy or XCTrack. But tracking flights is not obligated.
6. Travellers diarrhea is real in Morocco, bring some imodium or similar, just in case!
7. The dress code is relaxed, including for women. Morocco is very open to tourism and locals are used to see different outfits especially in touristic places. The only exception will be when visiting sacred and religious places where there'll be a stricter dress code where both men and women need to cover up.
8. Tap water is drinkable in big cities but in the countryside and villages, it often comes from local streams without treatment. We will provide bottled water while being in the countryside, or you could bring a filter to save plastic.
Experience:
1. Ideally you come with a bit of thermal experience, and you are able to take off and land independently, even in unknown uneven terrain, without windsock, etc.
2. Around 50 flying hours recommended
3. Some of the flying sites are thermo dynamic, which means you need some experience taking off with wind. Don’t worry if you are feeling insecure about this. We will first go to the coast so you can get acquainted with your wing, and will feel confident to take off anywhere.
Rescue & Safety
Whereas we strive to keep this flying holiday as safe as possible, please be aware that you are in Africa, without access to European or UK rescue standards. The hospitals in Marrakech and Agadir are of a high standard, but there are no helicopters for rescue, and only few ambulances with paramedics outside the city. In any case we advise you to get an insurance, covering rescue and repatriation and medical expenses that specifically states the policy will cover paragliding activities.
